How to Install/Replace Ribbon Roll

Instructions on how to install a new or replace a used ribbon roll in the ZT111

Updated over 3 months ago

In using the ZT111 Label Printer, you will need to know how to both initially install a roll of ribbon as well as replace an empty roll. This step-by-step guide will lead you through that process to make sure that everything functions and calibrates properly.

  1. Open the side media door on the printer

  2. Open the printhead

  3. If replacing an empty ribbon roll, remove and throw away the receive/front roll, not the empty roll on the back spindle

  4. If replacing an empty ribbon roll, do not throw away the empty cardboard core

  5. If replacing an empty ribbon roll, move the empty cardboard core from the back spindle to the front spindle. It is very important that a cardboard core is present on the front/receive spindle, as failure to have that will require a lengthy unwinding process when changing the ribbon in the future

  6. Place the new roll onto the feed/rear spindle, making sure that the label feeds off from the back side of the roll

  7. Feed the ribbon underneath the printhead assembly, and not the media sensor or the black plastic paddle holding the labels

  8. Pull some of the ribbon through the front to give some slack to work with

  9. Pull the ribbon up over the front of the printhead assembly and make sure that the matte side of the ribbon is facing you, and not the shiny side

  10. Apply a piece of tape or a piece of a label onto the matte side at the end of the ribbon that you fed through the printhead, so that the sticky side of the tape/label and the shiny side of the ribbon are facing the same direction

  11. Feed the ribbon over the printhead and use the tape or piece of label to stick the ribbon onto the front/receive roll

  12. Gently roll the receive roll by twisting the spindle clockwise to pull the ribbon tight through the printer

  13. Gently smooth out any wrinkles in the ribbon passing over the printhead

  14. Close the printhead, making sure to feel both the click and "thunk" to lock the lever fully into its vertical position.

  15. Unpause the printer

  16. Close the side media door
